My name is Steven Owens, and I'm an Airline Pilot for American Airlines and a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI / CFII / MEI) based in the DFW area. I started my career as a CFI and Stage Check Instructor, training and evaluating pilots at all stages of flight training. I routinely assessed students' performance against FAA standards.
Before American, I was a Captain and Pilot Recruiter/Interviewer for SkyWest Airlines. This gave me insight into how pilots are evaluated, not just in training, but in real selection and performance environments.
Across these roles, I've spent a lot of time on both sides of the training process - teaching, evaluating, and selecting pilots - and I bring that perspective into every checkride prep session.
My focus is simple: helping pilots bridge the gap between "I've been trained" and "I'm ready for my checkride," using realistic ACS-based oral exam preparation and structured, scenario-driven review.
If you're approaching a checkride and want to feel prepared - not surprised - on checkride day, this is what I do.
